Software as a Service(SaaS), is both a breakthrough in technology delivery, and a powerful catalyst for changing the value proposition and economics of business management. It is a new on-demand software delivery model whereby an application is hosted to provide services to multiple customers through the Internet. The user of the software need not buy the software or download and install it on a computer. Instead SaaS proves to be the low-cost way for businesses to obtain rights to use the software as needed without the associated complexity and potential high initial cost of equipping every device with the applications that are only used when needed. It typically requires less staff to implement because the need for onsite installation and maintenance are nonexistent. Also, because the software is hosted remotely, users need not worry about set-up, licenses, training and maintenance. All they need to do is pay a monthly or per-use fee to the vendor who in turn does everything from hosting to maintenance and upgrades of the software. Additionally, on-demand solutions take less time to deploy. SaaS is more economical, faster and requires less human capital.

SaaS derives its name from the fact that the software vendor hosts the application and makes it available to customers as a 'service' rather than a product. SaaS goes under many other names as well: On-demand applications, on-demand software, hosted services, hosted software, utility computing, or software-on-demand. But the fundamental idea behind all of these is the same: a software provider is responsible for the availability, maintenance, scalability, disaster recovery, upgrade etc. of an application. That's what users are paying for.
